3. Ahrefs

Ideal for: Professional SEOs and owners of small to large websites

G2 score: 4.6/5

Pricing: Ahrefs presents a 7-day trial for $7. Premium plans start at $82/month, billed annually

Originally launched in 2011 as a backlink analysis tool, Ahrefs is now a SaaS-based tool that lets you conduct comprehensive SEO and backlink analysis on any domain, including your competitors’. The stand-out feature of Ahrefs is that it has the largest backlink index in the world (over 22 trillion internal backlinks).

The Ahrefs dashboard shows you a graphical overview of the most important metrics for the websites you are monitoring. It shows you the metrics from the Site Explorer on traffic, authority and backlinks, a Site Health score from the Site Audit, and the ranking evolution for the keywords you track with the Rank Tracker.

Here’s a brief overview of these important Ahrefs features:

Site Explorer

With Ahrefs Site Explorer, you can search any page or website for a complete backlink analysis, an estimate of the number of keywords the site is ranking for, the traffic the site generates and its traffic value. At a glance, you will see a pastureland of metrics for the site you’re exploring. These metrics include Ahrefs Rank, Domain Rating, Backlinks, Organic Keywords, Organic Traffic, Referring Domains and Traffic Value.

Rank Tracker

The Rank Tracker permits you to monitor your site for specific keywords in search engines. It shows you all the keywords you are ranking for and suggests associated keywords. This feature provides detailed information for every keyword you enter into the system and summarizes the information for your projects with SEO metrics like Average Position, Visibility, Traffic, SERP features, Positions, Distribution, Locations, Keywords, Competitors and Locations.

Site Audit

Ahrefs Site Audit tool crawls your site and gives you a Health Score based on the extensive analysis of the site. It also makes detailed suggestions as to the locations where you can enhance your technical SEO.

Keyword Explorer

My favorite Ahrefs feature, the Keyword Explorer, helps you analyze keywords that rank on search engines. This feature goes beyond the traditional Google lookups as it integrates with YouTube, Amazon and international search engines like Yandex and Baidu.

Once you put in a keyword, you’ll have access to an extensive overview of keyword metrics like Keyword Difficulty, Search Volume, CPC, Return Rate, and Global Volume.

Up until recently, I used Ahrefs mainly for competitor analysis and keyword research, and I found it to be one of those tools that are very hard to hate. The only downside that really mattered to me was the price. I found it to be too expensive for my needs right now so I canceled my plan.

If I ever need an advanced SEO tool in the future (and I will soon), I’ll definitely renew my Ahrefs plan. It’s that good.

Key features of Ahrefs

Pros of Ahrefs

Cons of Ahrefs

Ahrefs does not offer a free plan or trial. It can also get really expensive.

This software is geared towards SEO experts—not beginners—and experienced digital marketers.

It does not have an affiliate program.

Although Ahrefs has great on-site help, it is difficult to get personalized support.

4. Google Search Console

Ideal for: Small businesses, websites and blogs

G2 Score: 4.6/5

Pricing: Google Search Console is a complimentary SEO tool

Originally known as Google Webmaster Tools, Google Search Console (GSC) is a complimentary tool that helps users monitor their site’s performance, see backlinks, submit sitemaps, search traffic, and fix technical errors. It also helps to improve keyword rankings in Google SERPs.

I often use GSC to analyze my personal blog and I love it for a number of reasons. First, GSC is completely free (duh!). Second, it provides a wealth of information for all sorts of websites, especially those that represent businesses and brands.

Contrary to popular opinion, GSC isn’t just for researching new keyword ranking opportunities or organizing an SEO campaign. While this tool performs these functions well, it can also provide data that can help you streamline your SEO campaigns further.

In my opinion, the most valuable resource in GSC is the Performance Report. In this report, you can see important information about your site’s organic performance, and you can track important KPIs for your business’ continual growth. The Performance Report gives details about your site’s impressions, clicks, CTR and average position in Google Search.

This way, you can identify keywords with a high CTR and find the search queries that people use to find your website. You can also use the data to determine the keywords that can best reveal the behavior and search intent of your site visitors. This will help you know how to optimize your on-page content and create new content that will better match your current high-CTR and high-value traffic.

Most importantly, GSC can help you find and fix technical issues (manual penalties, crawling errors, malware detected, increase in 404 pages, etc.) to ensure that your web pages are correctly indexed & are accessible to visitors. Whenever technical issues are detected on your site, GSC will send you email alerts, and when you have fixed those issues, you can notify Google of that.

In spite of all these positives, I don’t recommend using GSC as your only SEO tool. I noticed that the average position data can be inaccurate sometimes, especially if your site’s impressions and clicks are low. But I love that you can link your Google Analytics account to GSC.

If you don’t want to use GSC, Google Ads is a great alternative.

5. SEMRush

Ideal for: Professional SEOs and businesses of any size

SEMRush provides a lot of information about your site, which you can use to create traffic-generating content, understand search intent, identify link building opportunities, and make changes to technical areas of your site to increase ranking in SERPs.

While I was in search of a good keyword research tool that would serve my blogging needs, I came upon SEMRush and I tried the free trial of the Pro plan. The first thing I noticed about this tool was its extensive feature set. With SEMRush, you can do just about anything—keyword research, advertising research, market exploration, backlinks research, SEO audits, rank tracking, and many more. You can even use it to track your social media stats and schedule posts for all your social media channels.

SEMRush’s interface is very visual. There are auto generated graphs and you can compare your domains and run competitive analysis in just a few clicks. There is a PPC Keyword tool that helps you collect keywords, and Ad Builder that helps you find inventive ad ideas and create HTML adverts for your Google Display Network campaigns.

My favorite feature of SEMRush though, was the SEO Writing Assistant. It helps you optimize your article or content based on your top 10 Google rivals. With this add-on, you can scan your content for originality and improve your content’s readability, while maintaining your brand’s voice.

On top of all this, SEMRush offers an active SEO marketing community to help you learn more about SEO and inform you of the ever-evolving SEO best practices. It also seamlessly integrates with useful SEO tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console.
